How routes are chosen & verified
Routes are chosen for the riding, not the commission. Here is how they get in, how they are verified, and what happens when we get something wrong.
How We Choose Routes
Routes enter the catalogue for road character, scenery, rideability, safety and seasonal feasibility — not because they are popular or pay well.
A route is included either because The Road Ahead team has ridden it, or because it is assembled from primary sources (official maps, rider reports, operator itineraries) and cross-checked against more than one of them.
Where a route has not been ridden by us, it is labelled accordingly — never presented as first-hand experience. See the provenance badge on each tour page.
Routes are revisited as conditions change. A road that was perfect in 2019 may not be perfect now; we refresh and re-verify rather than leaving content to go stale.
Ridden & Verified Methodology
Ridden & Verified is a formal status assigned only by an administrator — never automatically, and never on the basis of online research alone.
To earn it, a route must carry supporting evidence: ridden miles, on-the-road photographs, ride notes and/or published ride-story links. That evidence is shown on the tour page.
A route without this status may still be excellent — it simply has not been validated on the road by The Road Ahead. We do not fake it. If we have not ridden it, we say so.
Related provenance labels — TRA Created, TRA Ridden, TRA Verified, Partner Tour and Editorial Recommendation — appear on every tour page so you know exactly how each route's content originated.
Editorial Independence
Editorial decisions are made separately from commercial relationships. The people who choose routes and write reviews are not incentivised on affiliate revenue.
A commercial partnership does not buy coverage, and the end of a partnership does not delete an honest recommendation.
Where The Road Ahead earns from a link, that fact is disclosed. Where it does not, nothing is implied.
Corrections Policy
Errors happen. Roads change, businesses close, and we get things wrong. If you spot an error, tell us.
Factual errors are corrected promptly and the correction is noted — quietly fixing things without saying so is not how trust works.
Report a correction via the contact page with the route name and what is wrong. We aim to acknowledge within two working days.
