Doughnut holesGreek omeletteHoney-dipped chicken

The legendary first-meal stop on Route 66 — a Chicago institution since 1923.

Get there early — the queue builds fast, but the doughnut holes make it bearable.

Exceptional steaks

Must Try

SteakMalbec

After the day we'd just had, it felt well deserved. The steaks were exceptional and washed down with a couple of excellent glasses of Malbec — probably the best meal of the trip so far.

Order the steak and a glass of Malbec — after a day of spills, the Mississippi and the Chain of Rocks Bridge, it's exactly the finish you want.

50s diner lunch

Must Try

EagleRider menu lunch

A proper American diner with a real 50s feel. Steve had called ahead and they had an EagleRider menu waiting for us. We were joined by Sebastian, EagleRider's CEO, who picked up the bill and asked us to pay it forward.

Ask Steve to call ahead — the EagleRider menu is waiting and the 50s vibe is exactly what you want from a Route 66 lunch.

Birthday night food and drinks

Must Try

A few drinksStevie's birthday celebration

We started in an Irish bar for food, drinks and a proper birthday celebration for Stevie. The Welsh were in fine form and the banter was flowing — after four days together, the group was beginning to feel like a travelling family.

If it's someone's birthday on the road, find an Irish bar — it never fails.

Lay-day dinner

Must Try

Cold drinksRelaxed dinner

Finding an Irish bar in Oklahoma wasn't what we expected when planning a Route 66 adventure, but it was a cracking choice — good food, cold drinks and the relaxed atmosphere that rounded off the lay day perfectly.

A lay day deserves a proper dinner — this hit the spot.

Ice-cold lemonadeBarbecue

Lunch at the Five Star Barbecue and Steakhouse in Stroud. Oklahoma had decided to remind us who was in charge — the ice-cold lemonade disappeared almost as soon as it arrived.

Soak your cooling vest at the water tap before you ride on — the lemonade and the shade are exactly what midday in Oklahoma calls for.

Must Try

It was my birthday, so we celebrated properly with dinner at LongHorn Steakhouse — great steaks, cold beers, plenty of laughs. Celebrating a birthday on Route 66, surrounded by good friends, is one I'll remember for a very long time.

If it's a special occasion on the road, this is the Amarillo steakhouse that does it justice.

Chinese dinner off the Plaza

Dinner at Zeng, a stylish Chinese restaurant tucked away just off the Plaza. The food was excellent, the service was brilliant and we left with full stomachs, sore faces from laughing and yet another great memory.

Chat to the staff — within minutes we were laughing with them and the restaurant was as entertained as we were.

Must Try

Cinnamon bunsCoffee

Coffee and cinnamon buns at the MidPoint Café at the exact midpoint of Route 66 — 1,139 miles to Chicago, 1,139 miles to Los Angeles. Entirely appropriate.

Stop at the halfway point for coffee and a cinnamon bun — it's the ritual every Route 66 rider does.

The 72oz Steak Challenge — eat it all in an hour and it is free

Must Try

72oz Steak ChallengeChicken fried steakTexas-sized margarita

Amarillo's most famous restaurant — a wild west-themed steakhouse.

Don't take the challenge unless you are genuinely enormous. Just enjoy a normal steak and the show.

Casino diner lunch

Lunch at the casino diner after watching a 6.9km freight train take almost five minutes to pass the railway crossing. Six locomotives, around 370 freight cars — the sheer scale of American freight rail is hard to comprehend until you're waiting for one to pass.

If the barriers come down, switch off and enjoy it — there's no rushing a 4.3-mile freight train.

Lunch on the corner

Must Try

Lunch on the corner

Lunch on the corner in Winslow on Independence Day — a forty-five-minute wait, but nobody minded. The atmosphere was fantastic, with locals and visitors celebrating together.

It's the corner, not the cuisine — embrace the wait, it's part of the Winslow experience.

Exactly what you hope an American diner will be — busy, full of Route 66 memorabilia.

Grab the Route 66 Burger and a malted milkshake. Sit at the counter if you can.

A quirky desert stop made famous by the 1987 film. Born to Be Wild blasts through the speakers. One of the surprise highlights of the trip.

Walk in, let the music wash over you, and if anyone picks up a guitar, join in.

At 44°C in the Mojave, a burger, chips and blessed air conditioning at the Ludlow Dairy Queen felt like perfection.

Order anything cold, sit in the air conditioning for ten minutes, and appreciate it more than any Michelin meal.

The McDonald's in Needles had one overwhelming attraction: air conditioning. My iced coffee tasted like one of life's great luxuries.

Order the biggest iced coffee they sell and sit until your core temperature drops.

A genuine old-west saloon in a genuine old-west town. Dollar bills cover every surface.

Pin a dollar bill to the wall with your name on it. Then grab a beer and watch the burros.

When the queue at Bubba Gump was too long, we ended up at Japadog. Only on Route 66 could a Japanese-inspired hot dog at the end of the journey feel entirely appropriate.

The terimayo dog is the one to get. Eat it on the pier rail looking out at the Pacific.

Signature Dish

A proper coffee in cool mountain air

Must Try

A small coffee shop in the alpine mountain town of Wrightwood — felt more like a Swiss village than Southern California.

Stop here on the Angeles Forest detour. The temperature drop alone is worth it after the desert.
