Motorcycle-Friendly Stops

Not everywhere on Route 66 loves a bike. This filters the whole road down to the places that do — good bike parking at restaurants, secure parking at hotels, and attractions that suit a rider. Andy's rider-tested list, not a press release.

Casino diner lunch

Lunch at the casino diner after watching a 6.9km freight train take almost five minutes to pass the railway crossing. Six locomotives, around 370 freight cars — the sheer scale of American freight rail is hard to comprehend until you're waiting for one to pass.

If the barriers come down, switch off and enjoy it — there's no rushing a 4.3-mile freight train.

Coffee and cinnamon buns at the halfway point

Must Try

Cinnamon bunsCoffee

Coffee and cinnamon buns at the MidPoint Café at the exact midpoint of Route 66 — 1,139 miles to Chicago, 1,139 miles to Los Angeles. Entirely appropriate.

Stop at the halfway point for coffee and a cinnamon bun — it's the ritual every Route 66 rider does.

Great steaks and cold beers

Must Try

SteakCold beer

It was my birthday, so we celebrated properly with dinner at LongHorn Steakhouse — great steaks, cold beers, plenty of laughs. Celebrating a birthday on Route 66, surrounded by good friends, is one I'll remember for a very long time.

If it's a special occasion on the road, this is the Amarillo steakhouse that does it justice.

Five Star Barbecue and Steakhouse

Stroud, Oklahoma

Barbecue lunch

Must Try

Ice-cold lemonadeBarbecue

Lunch at the Five Star Barbecue and Steakhouse in Stroud. Oklahoma had decided to remind us who was in charge — the ice-cold lemonade disappeared almost as soon as it arrived.

Soak your cooling vest at the water tap before you ride on — the lemonade and the shade are exactly what midday in Oklahoma calls for.

Route 66 Diner

St. Robert, Missouri

My Rating

4.0

Parking

good

Signature Dish

50s diner lunch

Must Try

EagleRider menu lunch

A proper American diner with a real 50s feel. Steve had called ahead and they had an EagleRider menu waiting for us. We were joined by Sebastian, EagleRider's CEO, who picked up the bill and asked us to pay it forward.

Ask Steve to call ahead — the EagleRider menu is waiting and the 50s vibe is exactly what you want from a Route 66 lunch.

Signature Dish

A proper coffee in cool mountain air

Must Try

Flat whiteMountain muffinsPastries

A small coffee shop in the alpine mountain town of Wrightwood — felt more like a Swiss village than Southern California.

Stop here on the Angeles Forest detour. The temperature drop alone is worth it after the desert.

A quirky desert stop made famous by the 1987 film. Born to Be Wild blasts through the speakers. One of the surprise highlights of the trip.

Walk in, let the music wash over you, and if anyone picks up a guitar, join in.

At 44°C in the Mojave, a burger, chips and blessed air conditioning at the Ludlow Dairy Queen felt like perfection.

Order anything cold, sit in the air conditioning for ten minutes, and appreciate it more than any Michelin meal.

Iced coffee — a great luxury at 44°C

The McDonald's in Needles had one overwhelming attraction: air conditioning. My iced coffee tasted like one of life's great luxuries.

Order the biggest iced coffee they sell and sit until your core temperature drops.

What to See (34)

Blue Swallow Motel

Worth a return

Tucumcari, NM, New Mexico

One of the most photographed motels anywhere along the Mother Road. We stopped next door at the Route 66 Welcome Centre before wandering over to take it in — a classic neon slice of the Mother Road that's been keeping travellers since the 1930s.

Amarillo, TX, Texas

Ten classic Cadillacs buried nose-first into the Texas soil, created in 1974, each one completely covered in layers of graffiti. Unlike most public art, visitors are actively encouraged to add their own masterpiece. Steve and Chantelle came prepared with spray cans — there was as much paint on riders as on the cars.

168 empty chairs sit silently on the footprint of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building, one for every life lost in the bombing on 19 April 1995.
