Ride Day 6 · Overnight Stop

Amarillo, Texas

Big sky, buried Cadillacs and a 72oz steak that most people lose to.

State
Texas
Ride Difficulty
Gentle · 2/5

Amarillo is the longest riding day's reward — 280 miles of open plains behind you, and a city built on cattle, railroads and the loudest roadside attraction in Texas. The sky here is enormous, the wind never stops, and Cadillac Ranch waits in a wheat field at the edge of town.

Ridden in person by Andy Stewart Last reviewed 2025-07-15

“280 miles of headwind, shoulders numb, then the Cadillacs half-buried in a wheat field at golden hour. We forgot every mile of the wind. Steve's briefing was five words: 'Long day. Hot. Windy. Flat. Brown.' He wasn't wrong.”

— Andy, from the ride journal
The Story

History

Amarillo was a cattle-shipping railhead that struck oil and gas and never looked back. Route 66 made it the last big stop before the long pull west into New Mexico. The Big Texan Steak Ranch opened in 1960 and turned a steak challenge into one of the most famous roadside gags on earth.

The Reason

Why Visit

Cadillac Ranch is one of the route's iconic images, the Big Texan is a one-night bucket-list experience, and the MidPoint Café nearby marks the exact halfway point of Route 66. It's the most Texan night of the trip.

Plan Your Day

Weather & Ride Difficulty

Weather

High plains semi-arid — hot dry summers (35°C+), biting winds, sudden dust, and dramatic thunderstorms. The crosswinds on the ride in will move a loaded bike. Check the forecast; storms here can be fierce.

Ride Difficulty · 2/5

Longest day at 280 miles but dead straight. The challenge is endurance, wind and heat — not corners. Start early, stop often.
