Most people ride the NC500 and never actually experience it.
They rush it, follow the wrong route, hit traffic, and miss the best roads.
This is how to ride it properly.
What is the NC500?
The North Coast 500 is a 516-mile loop starting and ending in Inverness, linking some of the most iconic roads in the Highlands.
It takes in Applecross, Torridon, Ullapool, Durness, and John o' Groats. Widely considered one of the best road trips in the world.
Day 1 — Inverness → Applecross
Loch Ness → Dores Beach → Bealach na Bà (iconic mountain pass).
Rider Insight: Ride this early. It's technical, narrow, and brutal in bad weather. Arrive at the top and you'll understand why this route exists.
Day 2 — Applecross → Ullapool
Torridon mountains (arguably Scotland's most scenic region) → coastal sweepers into Ullapool.
Rider Insight: This is where the ride becomes special. The road through Torridon is simply one of the greatest in the UK.
Day 3 — Ullapool → Durness
Kylesku Bridge → Smoo Cave → Durness.
Rider Insight: Remote, wild, and one of the best riding days in the UK. The road north of Ullapool along Loch Assynt is worth the whole trip.
Day 4 — Durness → Wick
Dunnet Head (northernmost UK mainland point) → John o' Groats → Wick.
Rider Insight: More exposed — expect wind. The east coast is dramatic in a different way. Take your time at Dunnet Head.
Day 5 — Wick → Inverness
Dunrobin Castle → Dornoch → Black Isle → Inverness.
Rider Insight: Faster roads, less technical — but a satisfying close to the loop. Stop at Dunrobin. It's genuinely extraordinary.
Why This Route Works
West coast first means you hit the best, most technical riding when you're fresh. The east coast finish is faster and more forgiving — perfect when you're tired but want to close the loop well. Balanced daily mileage throughout, which matters more than most people realise on a 5-day tour.
