I've used a lot of bike care products over the years. Most of them are fine. Some of them are excellent. One of them I genuinely recommend to every rider I take on tour.
That's Muc-Off.
Here's the honest version — what it does well, what it's best for, and why after 15 years of touring in all conditions, it's the only brand I travel with.
Why Bike Care Actually Matters on Tour
When you're riding 300 miles a day through mud, rain, gravel, and road grime, your bike takes a proper beating. Most riders don't think about maintenance until something goes wrong.
The problem is that a dirty chain, contaminated brakes, or seized components don't fail suddenly — they degrade gradually, making the bike feel worse, ride less confidently, and ultimately costing you money in wear and replacement.
Good bike care is preventative. And on a multi-day tour, it's genuinely part of the riding experience.
What Muc-Off Makes and Why It Works
Muc-Off started in cycling but made the jump to motorcycles properly — and the products translate brilliantly because they were built for exactly this kind of punishment: high usage, constant exposure to the elements, and riders who care about their kit.
Nano Tech Bike Cleaner — the flagship. This is the one that got their reputation. Spray it on, leave it for a minute, rinse it off. Road grime, oil residue, mud — gone. It's pH neutral, so safe on all surfaces including carbon, anodised parts, and brake rotors. I use this after every day on tour.
Motorcycle Chain Lube — they do a wet and dry version. On UK and European tours, I use the wet. It goes on thin, penetrates properly, and doesn't fling off at speed or attract grit the way cheaper lubes do. One application lasts 300+ miles in mixed conditions.
Muc-Off MO-94 — this is their multi-purpose spray, similar in function to WD-40 but significantly better for motorcycle applications. Displaces water, loosens seized fasteners, protects exposed electrics. The one thing I always keep in my tank bag.
Foam Wash — for a deeper clean. Apply, agitate with a soft brush, rinse. Takes the kind of grime off that the nano cleaner alone won't touch after a particularly brutal day.
The Honest Part
Is it cheap? No. Muc-Off sits in the premium bracket and makes no apology for it.
Is it worth the price? Yes — for two reasons.
First, the products work as described. I've tried budget alternatives that look similar and perform significantly worse. You're not paying for marketing here.
Second, a motorcycle is an expensive piece of kit. Maintaining it properly extends its life, keeps it performing correctly, and means fewer problems on the road. The cost of a Muc-Off kit is trivial compared to replacing a chain, a set of pads, or dealing with a seized caliper mid-tour.
What I Actually Travel With
When I pack for a tour, here's what goes in the kit bag:
- Nano Tech Bike Cleaner (200ml travel size)
- Chain Lube — wet
- MO-94 spray
- One microfibre cloth
That's it. Four items that handle everything from daily cleaning to emergency maintenance. They all fit in a zip-lock bag inside a pannier.
The Bottom Line
If you're serious about touring, you need to be serious about bike care. Not obsessive — but consistent.
Muc-Off is the brand I trust because it's been tested in the conditions that matter: Scottish winter roads, French mountain passes, 16-day cross-country tours. It doesn't let you down.
