Everyone rides the NC500. It's incredible, but it's also getting crowded with campervans. These five roads give you Scotland at its most raw.
1. The Applecross Peninsula (Bealach na Bà)
The steepest road ascent in the UK. Hairpin bends that would make an Alpine pass jealous, with views across to Skye that stop you mid-corner. Go early morning before the tour buses.
2. The A838 — Durness to Scourie
Single-track road along the northwest coast. No barriers, no armco, just you and the Atlantic. The kind of road where you stop every mile to take photos.
3. Glen Etive
You've seen it in James Bond. The single-track road from the A82 down to Loch Etive is 12 miles of perfection. Mountains on both sides, deer on the road, and complete solitude.
4. The B869 — Drumbeg to Lochinver
The "wee mad road." Tight, twisting, with constant elevation changes and views that make you question why you ever ride anywhere else.
5. The A87 to Skye (via Eilean Donan)
Yes, it's well-known. But riding across the Skye Bridge at sunset, with the Cuillin ridge silhouetted against the sky, is one of those moments that defines why you ride.
The Secret
These roads are best in May or late September. The midges are manageable, the light is extraordinary, and you might have the road to yourself.
